Description:
In this workshop, participants will receive unique writing prompts that will inspire them to experiment with known contemporary and classic poetic forms. Each session will include a mini lesson, independent writing time, an open mic, a live Q&A, and reflection time.
We will focus on 3 poetic forms specifically. In the last workshop, we studied How-to, Ghazal, and Golden Shovel poems. This time, we will learn how to put a fun twist on a Cascade, the Luc Bat (Vietnamese form), and the Ovillejos (16th-century Spanish form) poems.
Have you heard of these forms before? No? Perfect. That’s exactly why they’re included in this session. Elani doesn’t want to teach you the same forms you have been learning about your entire career. It’s time to switch it up, and have some fun with rhyme schemes.
Half an hour before the workshop, all participants will receive an email that includes the presentation slides, links to all the poetry examples, and any other helpful resources in a document, so they can follow along as Elani reads and instructs.
After the workshop, all participants will receive a feedback form to fill out with any constructive criticism that they have, and some bonus content that will help them continue writing on their own or any additional resources that was requested during the Q&A.

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email that will include the Google Teams link that you will use to login to the session the day of. Also, you will receive a list of writing resources that will prepare you for our session. These include fun 5, 10, and 15 minute writing sprint timers, prompts, and tips on sharing your poetry with others.
If this is your first time taking an online workshop with these elements, you will know exactly how to fully engage alongside your peers. Even for seasoned writers, it can be intimidating writing a brand new poem within a time limit if you haven’t had practice. No sweat! Elani’s gotchu!
