Moon Milk
by Elani Spencer
we drink moon milk at dawn
creamy goodness pooling in the soft fabric of the universe
It dribbles down our chin, tasting of tomorrow sweet
like midnight drives, goodnight kisses, bedtime stories
I remember the one my grandmother always read
the one about the girl who could fly
like nightingales through the silhouettes
of magnolias and redwoods
delivering herself from oppression
Back then, I didn’t think there was anything to escape
besides the car-cashing moon
but now I pray for wings, for feathers,
the soft blush of twilight on the horizon
I spread my arms open wide and wait
hoping the milk will bless my body
feel the cosmic pull of the divine
in my chest
Finally, we reach out
to pull back the curtain of starry sky
to find ourselves on the other side
preparing to take the stage
a poem, metaphors aglow,
words like scripture
delivering us just the same
