Fireflies
by Elani Spencer
boisterous bursts of golden light
illuminate the dark valleys of change– rising up
between the complicit mountains
small yet graceful bodies dance unafraid
inside tufts of grass
as the tumbleweeds of the past
come rolling in
the click of dew-drop wings crescendo:
the voices of the youth harmonizing
for freedom, for justice
Don’t you recognize the song?
their eternal flames stoked by the breath
of ancestors new and old:
Ginsburg, Davis, Jones, Baker…Truth,
they won’t fly away from
because it’s all we have
our path to shifting worlds
Hurry now! Follow them!
they will guide us through
